Nervous System Injuries

Every time you do anything, it is due, at least in par,t to your nervous system. If you scroll through social media posts on your phone, it is because your brain sends a signal to your fingers, and the nerves in your fingers react. If you got distracted midway through a 90-second video, it is also because of your brain, the center of your central nervous system. Nerves are not just another bodily tissue; they do not heal as quickly or as well as other tissues, such as skin or muscles; if you feel sore the day after a big workout but better the next day, it is because your muscles have already healed substantial, and most of the time, when you get a superficial cut on your skin, it has already started healing by the time you put an adhesive bandage on it. Injuries to the central and peripheral nervous system can result from any traumatic injuries, including but not limited to motor vehicle accidents and accidental falls. If you have been diagnosed with a concussion, traumatic brain injury (TBI), spinal cord injury, or nerve damage localized to one part of your body, contact a Santa Fe car accident lawyer.

Central Nervous System Injuries Can Upend Your Whole Life

The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system. The brain sends signals to the spinal cord, and it conveys them to the peripheral nervous system, which includes all the other nerves in the body. Unlike most body tissues, the cells of the central nervous system do not regenerate, but they can reorganize, so it is sometimes people to regain some function in affected body parts after a spinal cord injury. Despite this, central nervous system injuries are the most devastating injuries you can get.  Spinal cord injuries can cause paralysis and chronic uncomfortable sensations in the entire body below the site of the injury, and patients require lifelong treatment to maintain a stable state of health. TBI can cause memory loss, chronic headaches, and problems with vision and mood. The difference between concussion and TBI is one of severity. Symptoms of concussion may resolve, but the effects of a series of apparently mild concussions can resemble those of a more serious TBI.

Peripheral Nervous System Injuries are More Troublesome Than Diagnostic Images Would Suggest

If you suffer a traumatic injury to your arm, leg, or back, it may seem to heal, but the pain might persist even if your X-rays look like your bones are good as new. This is because the nerves in the affected body part regenerate more slowly. When the nerve injury causes severe symptoms disproportionately to the acute injury, it is called complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Symptoms of CRPS include pain, weakness, numbness, skin changes, and odd sensations of temperature. The only treatment for CRPS is supportive treatment while waiting for the nerves to heal.
