The surviving family members of people who die in preventable accidents have the right to file wrongful death lawsuits against the parties legally responsible for causing the accidents or failing to prevent them. Among the damages that the survivors can request are compensation for lost companionship and, if they depended financially on the victim, compensation for lost income. The survivors can file a wrongful death lawsuit regardless of the victim’s age; if a nonagenarian dies in an accident, it is still an untimely death. Teen Passenger Dies in Single Vehicle Accident Caused by Newly Licensed Driver
Speeding up before merging and slowing down before a turn are not intuitive, and driver’s ed teachers frequently remind students about them. These required changes of speed are likewise a common source of lost points on road tests for new drivers seeking to get a license. In March 2026, a 16-year-old who had recently gotten a driver’s license was driving at high speed on Southfork Road when he attempted to turn onto Cedar Road. He did not reduce his speed adequately and lost control of the car, eventually crashing. A 15-year-old friend of the driver was sitting in the front passenger seat and was ejected from the vehicle.
The 15-year-old died at the scene of the accident, but the driver did not suffer life-threatening injuries. News sources did not publish the names of the two teens who were in the car at the time of the accident, nor a description of the vehicle. The KOB 4 news website reported that the 16-year-old driver was later arrested due to allegations arising from the accident. It is not clear whether his case will go through the juvenile justice system or whether he will face criminal charges as an adult; a 16-year-old may go through either process, depending on his or her previous interactions with the juvenile court system, if any, and on the severity of the criminal charges. Regarding civil litigation that might arise from this accident, because the at-fault driver is a minor, the victim’s parents have the right to sue the teen driver’s parents for wrongful death, even if the teen driver does not get a criminal conviction.
